COLAPINTO CELEBRATES FORMULA REGIONAL PODIUM IN ZANDVOORT

The Formula Regional European Championship by Alpine (FRECA) season reached its halfway mark last weekend in Zandvoort. Bullet Athlete Franco Colapinto excelled at MP Motorsport’s home soil, turning a by far difficult season into a triumph.

The weekend got off to a rather wet but promising start, the Argentinian driver was in his element, topping the FRECA timesheets in the treacherous conditions.

Saturday started under blue skies and Franco qualified into the top 6 for the first time this season and turned the great performance into points after crossing the line in fifth. A solid result that proved the hard work the team put into improving the car, but that was not enough for Colapinto, who aimed for even more on Sunday.

The 18-year-old qualified on the second row of the 32-car grid for Race 2 and after a rocket start, he moved up to second place. He’s showed great pace from lights to flag, even setting the fastest lap of the race in his Gulf Oil International liveried car and gave the race leader a good run for his money. In the end, the ROFGO driver came home in 2nd place, one second behind the leader and scoring his maiden single-seater podium of the season.

I’m happy to finish on the podium and very proud of the team,” – Colapinto said. “We’ve been struggling since the beginning of the season for various reasons, but we have managed to bounce back. The mechanics and engineers did an amazing job and now we’re finally starting to get the results we wanted and deserved. We’re on the right track and I can’t wait to be back in Spa.”

This is Franco’s sixth podium finish in 2021. The 18-year-old – who is running a double campaign this year, switching between LMP2 machinery and the open-wheel F3 car – has already scored three 2nd places, a 3rd place, and a win this season in the Asian and European Le Mans Series respectively.
Franco’s next race is in Monza for round four of the European Le Mans Series in two weeks’ time.
